Gastrogeography: Stories from Mexico to Singapore
Singapore Biennale 2025: pure intention
This project stages an “invasion of Mexican street food” as part of RRD's extensive research on colonial processes, from pre-Hispanic times to contemporary Mexican culinary practices. Using cookbooks, popular magazines, street food packaging, advertisements, and other printed materials found at street stalls in Mexico, RRD examines these syncretic expressions of visual culture to address the parallel histories of Singapore and Mexico, particularly their complex relationships with colonial legacies. RRD integrates paintings, handmade plates, murals, sculptures, tablecloths, and other printed materials, along with video content that fuses street food gastronomy with Mexican mythologies.
